Recently, Professor Liang Yu from the School of Automation and Professor Dong Yue from the Advanced Research Institute for Carbon Neutrality at Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT) have published a review paper entitled A Review of Hydrogen-Enabled Resilience Enhancement for Multi-energy Systems online in Proceedings of the IEEE, a top comprehensive journal in international engineering. NUPT is the first affiliation of the paper. Professor Liang Yu from the School of Automation serves as the first author. Professor Dong Yue from the Advanced Research Institute for Carbon Neutrality, Professor Goran Strbac and Dr. Haoyu Fang from Imperial College London are co-corresponding authors.

Focusing on the cutting-edge topic of hydrogen-enabled resilience enhancement for multi-energy systems under extreme natural disasters, extreme weather and cyber-physical attacks, the paper systematically summarizes the advantages of hydrogen in improving the resilience of multi-energy systems. It thoroughly analyzes potential vulnerabilities of technologies associated with hydrogen production, storage, transportation and utilization, as well as optimization and decision-making challenges faced in hydrogen-enabled resilience enhancement of multi-energy systems. On this basis, the paper establishes an integrated framework covering resilience metrics, extreme-event-oriented fault modeling and uncertainty handling, resilience planning enhancement and resilience operation enhancement. It systematically reviews existing resilience metrics and extreme-event-driven fault models. At the resilience planning level, the paper classifies existing resilience improvement measures by the type of hydrogen-related facilities, and summarizes corresponding uncertainty handling methods, extreme event scenario generation approaches and modeling frameworks for planning problems. At the resilience operation level, in accordance with the evolution of extreme events, the paper divides hydrogen-enabled resilience enhancement measures into three phases: pre-event prevention, in-event emergency response and post-event recovery. It systematically summarizes the action mechanisms and application modes of hydrogen resources in different response stages and cross-stage coordination. The paper identifies six future research directions: comprehensive resilience metric design, advanced extreme event scenario generation, spatio-temporal cyber-physical fault modeling under compound extreme events, multi-network and multi-timescale coordinated planning and operation, joint low-carbon and resilience optimization, and large language model-assisted full-process resilience improvement.

Integrated Framework for Hydrogen‑Enabled Resilience Enhancement of Multi-Energy Systems

This paper is the world’s first systematic review dedicated to hydrogen-enabled resilience enhancement of multi-energy systems. It systematically establishes the knowledge system, key technological context and future development roadmap of this field. The work is of great significance for advancing hydrogen from a low-carbon energy carrier into strategic infrastructure for future resilient energy systems, safeguarding national energy security, and supporting the construction of a clean, low-carbon, safe and reliable new-type energy system.

Founded in 1913, Proceedings of the IEEE is one of the oldest journals published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It publishes approximately 50 papers each year and has a latest impact factor of 30.9. Focusing mainly on important technological advances and systematic reviews in electrical, electronic, communication, computer engineering and related interdisciplinary fields, it ranks among the most influential journals in global engineering.
