On August 15, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, a leading higher education evaluation institution, released the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), showcasing the world’s top 1,000 research universities. A total of 222 universities from mainland China made the list. Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NJUPT) ranked 376th worldwide, climbing 82 places from 2024, and placed 77th nationwide.
First launched in 2003, the ARWU is the world’s earliest comprehensive global university ranking and has since become one of the most influential and authoritative benchmarks in higher education. The ranking adopts internationally comparable objective indicators and third-party data, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers, publications in Nature and Science, papers indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), as well as per capita academic performance. Each year, more than 2,500 universities worldwide are evaluated, with the top 1,000 published in the ARWU.
